Water is a rare and precious commodity that must be learned to preserve. Not only will you act with respect for the planet, but you will also reduce your expenses by becoming an informed consumer. Make sure to follow these common sense tips to significantly reduce your bills and become a true model citizen!
Small aside by way of introduction: according to the Ministry of Environment, which relies on the results of a study conducted in the country between 2005 and 2015, water consumption in Luxembourg has dropped from 236 to 202 liters per day and per capita. Encouraging!
At home
It's easy for you to limit your water consumption by adopting simple actions everyday. By integrating them little by little, they will quickly become reflexes.
1. Do not let the water run for no reason
When you brush teeth , it is not reasonable to let the water flow freely. As soon as your rinse cup is filled, make the effort to close the faucet. Then rinse with your water glass.
This operation is very light and will save you over time much more than you think!
2. Prefer the shower rather than the bath
This is what environmental advocates are constantly saying, and they are right: a shower consumes on average 30 to 50 liters, while a bath requires about 150 liters of water. But be careful not to spend hours there ...
The differential is eloquent enough for you to think of preferring this much less expensive mode of body wash! Especially since a shower is more revitalizing than a bath which, although it has a soothing action, is a big consumer of water.
3. Do the dishes in the bins of your sink
Reproduced daily several times, this housework can lead you to consume an excessive amount of water. To limit waste, you can streamline your wash by filling both bins in your sink . You will have two different spaces for washing and rinsing.
If your sink has only one tray, proceed in two steps, with a first phase devoted to washing. Then, after draining the dirty water, rinse each utensil separately.
4. Install flow regulators on your faucets
If you do not have mixers that allow you to adjust your flow to the desired power, you still have the opportunity to adapt very efficient regulators on your tap.
These will allow you to control your flow and, for some of them, to add a filter, which is particularly valuable to enjoy good quality water.
5. Equip your WC with a double command
A double button, installation of a childlike simplicity, will allow you to save an average of 5 liters of water per flush.
And if you want to go further, why not choose the dry toilets ? However, the option requires some logistics, including an outside compost to store soiled sawdust.
6. Activate the "eco" program of your washing machine
If your washing machine has a budget button, use this washing mode faster and more energy efficient.
Remember to always turn your device with a full charge. Your water bills, but also electricity, will be less onerous to pay.
Outside
You can also save money outside your home.
If you reproduce your virtuous behaviors while traveling to the hotel , camping or when you are invited, you will also have a positive influence.
7. Limit watering your lawn
In a pinch, book it at the early or late hours of the day. In this way, the water you use will not evaporate instantly. Similarly, if you have automated irrigation equipment, plug it in at night.
Another tip is to use a drip system for your watering, or a porous pipe that allows you to target the plants you want to water. Your garden will thank you!
8. Wash your car in the car wash
When you clean your vehicle at home, you waste the resource unnecessarily: in fact, you do not set the jet in overpressure, unless you have a dedicated device.
As an added argument, more and more wash stations are environmentally friendly, that they recycle wastewater and also use soaps that dissolve more easily.
9. Use rainwater to quench your flowers
The trick is also good for your vegetable garden. Thanks to your gutters, it will be easy for you to collect the rainwater, which you will have as well satiety. You just need to place containers under your gutters to store a significant amount of water, free and clean.
Be careful though not to consume it: even if it is clear, it is not safe to drink because it does not contain the minerals that are essential for the proper functioning of our body.
