Casino Luxembourg – Forum for Contemporary Art, located in the heart of Luxembourg City (41, rue Notre-Dame), is a leading contemporary art centre, inaugurated in 1996. Housed in the former Casino Bourgeois, built in 1882, it has been transformed into a modern and internationally oriented art institution.
Concept and Mission
The forum promotes contemporary art through an international programme, with a strong focus on emerging young artists.
The ground floor offers welcoming public spaces: two exhibition rooms, a specialised art library and bookshop, a café-restaurant, and a space for educational activities and workshops.
The first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions — solo shows and thematic projects — supported by a rich programme of guided tours, talks, concerts and workshops for all audiences.
An Artistic Laboratory
Casino Luxembourg acts as a true laboratory for artistic experimentation. It supports creation, produces new works and provides artists with a space for reflection and visibility, while being part of wide professional networks.
Since 2023, an artistic research programme has been developed at Casino Display, a space dedicated to residencies and exploratory projects in collaboration with art schools from the Greater Region.
History and Architecture
Built in 1882 by Pierre Kemp and Pierre Funck, the building was long a cultural landmark in the city. Since 1995, it has been adapted to serve as a contemporary art venue, thanks to the input of artist and curator Urs Raussmüller.
In 2016, the ground floor was redesigned by architect Claudine Kaell to improve reception, circulation, and accessibility.
The building also houses notable permanent artworks such as Zäit Wuert by the collective LAb[au] and A Wise Thought in a Circle by Nedko Solakov.
Audience and Services
Casino Luxembourg welcomes a broad audience thanks to a well-adapted cultural offer:
- Free guided tours every Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon, available in multiple languages
- Parent-baby visits, children’s workshops, artist talks, lectures, and more
Conclusion
Casino Luxembourg – Forum for Contemporary Art is much more than an exhibition space. It is a vibrant place for meeting, learning, reflection and creation. Open to all, it combines artistic excellence with accessibility and dialogue, playing a leading role in the contemporary art scene in Luxembourg and beyond.
