Good to Know: The Rule for a Public Holiday Falling on a Sunday

What happens if a public holiday falls on a non-working day?

In Luxembourg, the law protects employees. If a legal public holiday falls on a day normally not worked by the employee (typically a Sunday, but also a Saturday in some work patterns), the employee is entitled to a compensatory day off.

In 2026, this is the case for All Saints’ Day, Sunday 1 November.

          • This day off must be taken within 3 months following the date of the public holiday.
          • It must be taken in kind (an actual day off) and cannot be replaced by financial compensation.

Be sure to discuss with your employer to set a date that works best for you!

With this information in hand, you are now ready to plan your 2025-2026 year in the best possible way. Make the most of each rest period and every long weekend!
